I like ultimax brand the hiking or skiing socks work well and have lots of cush
to fill in the extra room, they make some for warm or cold weather

available thru REI

The Ultimax Ironman socks are low cut thin socks great for speed skates

Have you considered adding a second or a thicker insole to the skate?

I have found the thick "skating socks" to be uncomfortable because of the
bulk having a higher tendency to bunch up and for the foot to feel like it
is wandering around in the boot.

A thicker insole may allow you to use your usual socks.

IMHO - It sounds as if your skates are too large if that was the case. I wear
rather thick athletic socks, but bought the skates with them in mind. My socks
never have bunched up (the skate is too snug for them to move around), and my
feet do not have sufficient room to move around in the skates. Yes, in the heat
of August in mid-Florida my socks do get just a bit damp, but never wet! In the
winter they are very comfortable!

Well to be honest, I just use regular athletic "Sweat" socks. I pull
them up nice and tight before putting my skates on, and they seem to do just
fine. (I typically go about 10 miles on an average day) The only real
drawback is when I go for extended period (Over 10 miles) I do usually have
to stop and change socks, to prevent them from getting too damp. (Chaffing
sucks)

As for your specific situation with the skates being slightly too big, I
would suggest adding an extra foot cushion pad. I did that with my last
pair and it worked like a charm. Although I will say that it's probably a
good idea to trim the cushion properly to fit inside the skate. If it
bunches up along the sides/toe/heel it can very easily cause blisters.

Thanks Bob for the link to the socks, I ordered them on Monday
morning, got them on Wed afternoon, skating right after that. Very
comfortable and seem very well built. Got a pair for the wife and she
likes them also, Thanks Chuck
You will love them. Just pay attention to the caution against using
bleach on them
