Vegetable oil to lube bearings?

Hi all,

Anybody use vegetable oil on their bearings? A guy I know says it is
fantastic, picked it up from a hippie skateboarder I hear. Supposed to
cure dandruff and other ailments too by the sound of how fantastic it
is... :-)

I heard he uses soya oil, but from another guy that it was olive oil, so
I am wondering if they are pulling my leg... :-)

They probably rub their bearings in their hair.

THAT is the funniest thing I've read for a few days. Well done!
Hilarious!

I heard of a guy who ran out of diesel and put vegetable oil in his
truck to get to next gas station too. But I've never seen anyone do it
first hand.

Unless you actually see them put it in their bearings, but them in
their wheels, put them on their skates and skate on them for several
sessions of many km's without service, I would be very skeptical.

I'm sure you'll find someone from the sub-continent who swears that
ghee (clarified butter often used in Indian style cooking) is a great
skate bearing lube for rainy days.

That is quite believable I think. The shipping company I
work for have one boat that runs on vegetable oil.
It is an old boat, rather small, and has a diesel engine.
It does tours on a lake that is inside an environmental
protection area.

I do not know to what extent the engine has been
modified for running on this oil. But it still sounds
quite much like a diesel.

Smells different though!
We call the skipper "Captain Pop Corn".

I went around the house one day trying to figure out what could be
used to lube bearings. Boring summer, and I couldn't get to any good
skating trails since I couldn't drive yet. It seems to me that even
runny bearing lube is made to stay in the bearings and is made to
reduce friction of metal on metal. Vegie oil would probably work, as
would petroleum jelly, but I don't think they would work as well as
the regular stuff. Make sure if you try experimenting you don't use a
water based lube.

Veggie oil works, BUT

1. It's too sticky - attracks dust and filth like no tomorrow
2. it's too high in viscosity, so it feels like you're skating in sludge -
way too high resistance to allow speedskating or sprinting - you get too
tired too fast working against the extra resistance.

Skateboarders may not mind as much as skaters.

Remind me now please. High viscosity means what, that
it runs slow or that it runs fast?

I went through the procedures in school years ago and
basically know what it is all about but I don't remember
the bottom line.

(Like when George Costanza is told that his cancer test
came back negative.)

High viscosity means that it is thick, and therefore runs slow.
