Although there still are inline skaters around (counting myself), I have
however noticed that it appear to be fewer now than some years ago.

I'm not sure if this is a local "phenomena" only, or if there has been a
global declining trend in inline skating during the last years...

It is not local. A lot of people bought inline skates during the time when
it was a new fad but many only used them a few times.

I had seen numbers a few years ago that inline skating had dropped to about
half of the peak. Since then a marketing person for Rollerblade claimed
that the market had rebounded and that more skates were being sold per year
than at it's low point.

Yes, for decades. Why? My only guess is that too many people got
hurt.

In-line skating is like having wings on my feet. It is the most fun
exercise I know of. But it (street skating) is risky.

Big front wheel skates (144 mm front wheel, four 80 mm trailing
wheels). Great for street skating, especially when you do not always
know the terrain.

How many is "some"? There's no question that it's declined since the
late 1990s, say, but my subjective impression (looking at the activity
here in London) is that it's starting to grow again.

I dunno, all I can really say is don't judge the health of the sport
from the health of this newsgroup. Most of the discussion happens on
web forums.

I got my first pair of inline skates almost 20 years ago (it was in 1990
if my memory don't cheat on me), and have seen both the rising trend
throughout the 1990s and until the beginning of this decade where
"everyone" should have them (dealers could have backorders for weeks),
and now a falling trend...

If I had based my view from the activity on this group, inline skating
should literally have been dead and buried years ago, but I was entirely
referring to what I've seen out there in the streets over the past
years...

Up here in Edinburgh Scotland, it usually seems like I'm the only one
doing it. I'm about to skate 5 miles to work this sunny Sunday
morning...

I can't speak for anyone else, but my data point is that I used to skate
quite a bit, but then I got back into biking. Skating is generally
limited to being a recreational/fitness activity, but bikes have
practical uses well beyond that.

For another data point, here is a quick extract of recent NorthShore
Inline Marathon entry totals:

2005: 3,530
2006: 3,327
2007: 3,289
2008: 2,845

I have given more private lessons(4) this year than for almost 3
years...i don't know if its an uptick in skating or people sorta
digging out skates and trying again

these are people who have had skates for a while and wanted to feel
safer by learning proper technique
